Status Epilepticus - Angelfire

A 12-year-old child with left-sided Rasmussen's encephalitis with drug refractory epilepsy (DRE) presented at the height of the pandemic, with worsening of seizure frequency from 4-5/day to 20/day, with new-onset epilepsia partialis continua. She demonstrated features of progressive cognitive decline. Patients were divided into two groups: fast evolution and slow evolution to hemiparesis and epilepsia partialis continua. These groups may represent different RE substrates. Fourteen patients achieved satisfactory seizure control, three patients had partial response to surgery, and five patients had maintenance of the pre-operative condition. Epilepsia partialis continua is now widely acknowledged as being a partial somatomotor status epilepti-cus. Its first description is credited to Koshewnikow,1 although Bruns-re¬ ported it at about the same time.
