The term 'applied linguistics' refers to a broad range of activities which involve solving some language-related problem or addressing some language-related concern. It appears as though applied linguistics, at least in North America, was first officially recognized as an independent course at the University of Michigan in 1946. Applied linguistics research provides insights that can give a principled way for teachers, authors’ editors and translators to engage with authentic examples of the type of text their students or clients are aiming to write. Applied linguistics draws upon foundational knowledge from linguistics, and our faculty and students value a broad-based understanding of a range of scholarly domains within linguistics.
